[ DVD - Zone 3 - NTSC ]

Story :

Oliver Stone used such words as "liberating" and "fun" to talk about U Turn's relatively quick production schedule of 42 days. Stone's ideas of film fun; however; are something older generations would call sick. This film is a Southwestern noir tale about Bobby Cooper (Sean Penn); a hotshot who is stuck in the tight confines of Superior; Arizona; when his car breaks down. His subsequent adventure is a meatball comedy--loud; obnoxious; and violent; and stuffed with diffused light; a hot cast; and a no-fat Ennio Morricone score. This film has plenty of odd characters; but you never really find out much about them. Bobby's first encounters include a repulsive mechanic (Billy Bob Thornton under the grease) and a blind Indian (Jon Voight under the makeup). Then there's Grace McKenna (a sizzling Jennifer Lopez); who is as dangerous as the curves of her red sundress. Bobby's got time to kill; and Grace seems more than willing. Unfortunately; it seems that Bobby has never seen a movie such as A Touch of Evil; if he had; he would know it can only get worse. About the time Grace's husband; Jake (Nick Nolte); shows up; Bobby is knee-deep in murder plots and double-crosses.
The first 40 minutes or so are "fun" to a point. Penn is the perfect near-creep to root for; and as he wanders back into town after meeting Grace; the eclectic characters pile up. But soon it gets monotonous; tiring; and just plain ugly. And when incest and bloody fights begin; the fun is gone. If Penn weren't so solid an actor and able to be empathetic in the most morose situations; the movie would be unwatchable at stretches. Lopez makes another good impression; but this is not a performance that stands out. Nolte; raspy and ill-looking; is the Lee Marvin of the '90s. Before U Turn is over; you are already wondering if Oliver Stone will do something else; something more important; soon.

Story :

A box-office hit when released in 1994; this sprawling; frequently overwrought familial melodrama may get sillier as its plot progresses; but it's the kind of lusty; character-based epic that Hollywood should attempt more often. It's also an unabashedly flattering star vehicle for Brad Pitt as Tristan--the rebellious middle son of a fiercely independent Montana rancher and military veteran (Anthony Hopkins)--who is routinely at odds with his more responsible older brother; Alfred (Aidan Quinn); and younger brother; Samuel (Henry Thomas). From the battlefields of World War I to his adventures as an oceangoing sailor; Tristan's life is full of personal torment; especially when he returns to Montana and finds himself competing with Alfred over Samuel's beautiful widow (Julia Ormond); whose passion for Tristan disrupts the already turbulent Ludlow clan. Under the wide-open canopy of Big Sky country; this operatic tale unfolds with all the bloodlust; tragedy; and scenery-chewing performances you'd expect to find in a hokey bestselling novel (in fact; it's based on the acclaimed novella by Jim Harrison); but it's a potent mix that's highly entertaining. Not surprisingly; John Toll won an Academy Award for his breathtaking outdoor cinematography. --Jeff Shannon

Story :

While much was made of the fact that Marie Antoinette elicited boos at Cannes; the many favorable reviews attracted less attention. Inspired by Antonia Fraser's biography; Sofia Coppola fashions a portrait that's just as dreamy as The Virgin Suicides; her first literary adaptation; and the Oscar-winning Lost in Translation. Set to a soundtrack of post-punk (a conceit that adds more interest than resonance); the teenaged Marie (Kirsten Dunst; quite good) may be shallow; but she's rarely unsympathetic. The story begins in the late-18th century as the Austrian Archduchess agrees to marry Louis-Auguste (Jason Schwartzman). After bidding adieu to her mother; Maria Theresa (Marianne Faithfull); she travels to France; where King Louis XV (Rip Torn) sets the rules--and the list is endless (Judy Davis' Comtesse de Noailles is the primary enforcer). As for the Dauphin; he's just a boy; really; with more interest in his key collection than their marriage bed. Should Marie produce an heir; it might be enough to sustain her--since life is nothing but an endless shopping spree--but clouds gather on the horizon as an impoverished populace rises up against their extravagant leaders. Coppola merely suggests what happens next; although history paints a darker picture. Filmed in and around the Chateau of Versailles; Marie Antoinette is a riot of rustling gowns; sparkling jewels; and Manolo Blahnik-designed shoes. To say that style trumps substance does its maker a disservice; but the look of the thing does leave the deepest impression. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
